18 - 27 October 2019

Selections open: apply now!

After the great success of the XIth Florence Biennale (462 participating artists from 72 countries and about 10.000 visitors - click here for the official video) we are glad to announce that the applications for the new edition are open. The XIIth edition of the Florence Biennale, the major contemporary art exhibition in Florence (Italy), will take place at the Fortezza da Bassofrom the 18th to the 27th October 2019.

Over the last twenty years, this biennial has become an outstanding showcase and a reference model in the contemporary art scene, offering artists who come to Florence from all continents, an extraordinary intercultural and interdisciplinary experience. In recognition of this commitment to the dialogue between cultures in 2001 the event was included by the United Nations in the program "Dialogue Among Civilization" and in 2017 it has obtained, among others, the patronage of the Italian National Commission for the UNESCO.

During each edition an International Jury composed by distinguished personalities in the world of art and culture, gives the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" Award to the best participating artists in the categories: Drawing, Calligraphy and Print, Painting, Mix Media, Sculpture, Ceramics, Textile Art, Art Jewellery, Photography, Digital Art, Video Art, Installation, and Performance Art.

Furthermore, the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" Lifetime Achievement Awards , are conferred to individuals who have reached pinnacles of artistic achievement and/or stood out for their contributions to culture: El Anatsui, Sauro Cavallini (in memoriam), Arata Isozaki, David Hockney, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Gilbert & George, Marina Abramović, Anish Kapoor, and Marta Minujín are among the recipients in the past editions.

The twelfth edition, whose theme will be unveiled in the coming months, will animate the Medicean city with a rich program of artistic and cultural activities: in addition to the main exhibition, there will be collateral events, shows, workshops, and conferences.

Information and updates about the next edition of Florence Biennale can be found on the official web site, www.florencebiennale.org or contacting the Organizing Secretariat at info@florencebiennale.org.

Confirming your participation by the 30th of April 2018, you will be entitled to concessionary fees. The International Selection Committee will examine the portfolio and curriculum of each candidate. Admitted candidates will receive the documentation for their participation, including all the information about exhibition spaces, services, prices, and deadlines.

FLORENCIE BIENÁLE

6-15 October 2017, Firenze, Fortezza da Basso, Italy

We are pleased to invite you to be a member of the International Selection Committee (C.I.S.) of the XIth edition of the Florence Biennale, the international contemporary art biennial that will be held in Florence, at the Fortezza da Basso, from 6 to 15 October 2017.

Since twenty years the Florence Biennale has been gathering artists from around the world in the ‘cradle of the Renaissance’ to participate to a contemporary art event that every two years has been attended not only by those who make art, but also by hundreds of people who teach, learn, promote, market, collect or otherwise consume, and enjoy art.

Through the theme of its XIth edition, ‘eARTh: Creativity & Sustainability’, the Florence Biennale aims at contributing to envision a future in which creativity and sustainability are inspiring principles of an artistic and cultural ‘ecosystem’ within a world that is respectful of nature and life forms on Earth. In this perspective cultural diversity and biodiversity do not exist in separate and parallel realms, but are part of a kind of co-evolutionary process that needs to be preserved and nurtured. Artists as well as creative and cultural industries, including therein museums, art galleries, artist-run societies, schools, publishers, and other organisations, can play a key role in the realisation of such a process.

The artists participating in the XIth Florence Biennale will compete for the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Award in twelve categories, respectively – Drawing and calligraphy, painting, mixed media, sculpture, ceramic art, jewellery art, textile art, photography, digital art, video, installation art, and performance art. Along with the artworks of participating artists with different cultural backgrounds and at different career stages, special projects by a few guest artists of honour will be presented. Special events will also be set up to show the works by the guest artists who will receive the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Lifetime Achievement Award for having entwined creativity and sustainability as principles inspiring their work. They will join other renowned artists who received that award in the past editions, for instance David Hockney, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Richard Anuskiewicz, Gilbert & George, Marina Abramović, Shu Yong, José Luis Cuevas, Giampaolo Talani, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Anish Kapoor, and Marta Minujín.

More details about the XIth Florence Biennale will soon be disclosed and news will be released also as updates posted in our official web site, www.florencebiennale.org. In the meantime would you kindly examine the documentation enclosed hereto, which includes information about how to become a member of our International Selection Committee. For any further information and to communicate your eventual interest please do not hesitate to contact our Organising Secretariat.

Kind regards.
